Shitthaung (Sittaung) Temple
- Shitthaung (Sittaung) Temple
One of the most important Buddhist temples located in Mrauk-U (Myohaung) in Arakan (Rakhine). Its name means "eighty thousand images." Built by King Min Bin in 1536, it is of rectangular shape, built of stone (unlike the monuments of Pagan [Bagan], which are largely of brick), and is surmounted by numerous bell-shaped stupas. The temple's design, and the images and carvings found within, are representative of a distinct Arakanese style of Buddhist art and architecture.
